Episode Guide

Series 1 | Series 2 | The Specials

No episode names like series 1, not sure why that is, but it is.

Episode 1 [Tx 30/09/2002]brent gareth ben manamana

We open the series with a spontaneous rendition of the song “Mah-na-mah-na”, originally performed by the muppets. The biggest shock to the series is that Tim has significantly changed his opinion about working at Wernham Hogg since being promoted to Senior Sales Clerk. Gareth gets a phone call from Oggy aka The Oggmonster. Neil Godwin, Jennifer’s replacement arrives, and Brent goes to meet him. Neil mentions they met before at te Ipswich conference, and we find out in a talking head from Brent that two weeks have passed since the end of the first series. Brent comes out and is told the “black man’s cock” joke by Gareth.
The Swindon staff are introduced at a lunchtime party to their new workmates. Brent tells us in a talking head about the Coventry conference, where he did impressions of the coordinator, Eric Hitchmoe, and we gather that he’s very much looking forward to doing a little stand up routine to all the new staff. Neil introduces him, while making a few comments that everyone laughs at. Brent starts off his routine badly, and it goes downhill from there. To make up for this, Brent later tells the “black man’s cock” joke to some of the staff gathered round at lunchtime which only results in him being cautioned by Jennifer and Neil for telling racist jokes.
Tim and Gareth (and Keith) introduce themselves to Rachel, while Brent starts going on about drugs and Scooby Doo. Again he is cautioned by Jennifer and Neil. Dawn suggests to Tim that it would be fun to wind up Gareth, but Tim mentions that Gareth looks to be a bit too busy, but he soon gives in and they’re back to old tricks. Brent addresses the office, telling them how much of a chilled out entertainer he really is. Things don’t go well, and Brent leaves, saying how he’d like his whole office to be staffed with mixed-race employees, given the chance. Dawn and Tim start joking about what Brent has says, until Lee comes in and pushes Tim up against the wall.
Brent also gets in trouble with Jennifer for an unpolitically correct joke about a black man’s cock.

Best moment: The opening, without a doubt.

Episode 2 [Tx 7/10/2002]brent keith appraisal

Brent starts the episode talking to Oliver about how his favourite actors of all time are Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier. Lee apologises to Tim about pushing him up against the wall. David Brent conducts the annual appraisals, first up is Tim. He stresses that is he is still planning to return to university and do a psychology degree, which Brent says is a waste. Dawn is next, and tells Brent how she always wanted to be a children’s illustrator. He coerces her into saying that she finds him a role model on her form.
The fire alarm goes off and everyone goes to the car park, except for Brenda, who’s carried halfway down the stairs by Brent and Gareth, at which point they give up. In the car park, Tim is asked by Dawn about Rachel, in a roundabout way.
Keith has his appraisal.
Upstairs again, Rachel asks Dawn if Tim has a boyfriend, and if she’d go out with him, but Dawn dodges answering. Again Brent tries to become more friendly with the Swindon staff, during a meeting with them he finds out they all preferred their time at Swindon, as Neil would try to motivate them there to do some work. Brent takes a few staff out to a pub lunch to show them what a great guy he is, but this backfires, with everyone ending simply staring at Keith slowly eating. Rachel and her mates are going to Yate’s, and she asks Tim along. Brent comes back to find everyone still in the office having a laugh with Neil, and he has a go at them. Neil has a go at Brent for embarrassing him in front of the staff, once he’s he left Brent comes out and tells Gareth Tim and Jamie that Neil hates them all and that they nearly came to blows. Gareth asks Rachel out, but she tells him she’s going out with Tim. Brent tells Dawn he’s fed up with his whole life at Wernham Hogg because no one’s laughing at his jokes anymore. He tells Dawn a poem he wrote when he was younger, Excalibur.

Best moment: Keith’s appraisal.

Episode 3 [Tx 14/10/2002]

Brent comes into work dressed just like Neil, but a bit cheaper. It’s Trudy’s birthday and amongst other gifts she receives a leather basque and a pink dildo. Rachel dares Tim to hide the dildo in Brent’s office, which he does easily, and is asked by Neil to take the new Swindon staff down to the warehouse. Brent goes and plays darts with Tony and Oliver until they say he looks 40.
Ray and Jude, two recruitment officers arrive from Cooper and Webb, an agency specialising in training days for those who want “to get an advantage in business”. They want to sign up Brent as a speaker, starting rate of £300 for 15 minutes! As he’s sorting out a second meeting with them, he finds the dildo, and goes into the office to find out who’s it is, with hilarious consequences. Rachel dares Gareth to ring Brent and say the things she writes down. Ray and Jude ask Brent profile questions for them to stick on their website, while Tim and Dawn wind up Gareth by combining his phone with some superglue.
It’s party time as Neil has bought a home-made cake for Trudy, and the booze is soon flowing. Brent soon starts bragging about how much he’s getting paid for 15 minutes work. Rachel and Tim start playing Top Trumps, Brent is still going on about how much he’s getting, until Finchy arrives.
Gareth tries to impress Rachel with his acute knowledge of Top Trumps, though this doesn’t work. It never works.
Trudy is now very merry, and seems to be kissing everyone except for Brent, who ends up...what’s the opposite of a compliment? The episode ends with Brent describing his imaginary encounter with The Corrs. Except for the actual ending.

Best moment: That nightmarish final image.

Episode 4 [Tx 21/10/2002]

Dawn comes across Tim and Rachel, who are all over each other in the office, which only confuses Gareth as he didn’t know. Brent asks Dawn to help him carry a big of his along to his Cooper and Webb presentation in the evening, for which he’s also printed off a whole load of business cards. Simon the IT guy is installing a firewall on Tim’s computer. Tim hates Simon. Gareth talks to Simon about Go Karting, which it turns out Simon is absolutely fantastic at. He talks a lot of crap, all of which Gareth believes. Neil has a go at Brent for making Dawn leave reception half an hour early to help him with his presentation. Lee asks Tim if he’s shagged Rachel, and Tim says he doesn’t kiss and tell, and either way, he doesn’t tell...
Brent is rehearsing his presentation with Gareth when he finds out about his nickname of Bluto, and then Mr. Toad when he confronts the staff about this. Neil again confronts Brent, this time about Brenda not having received her wags, and then Brent’s general casual attitude towards his job.
Ray and Jude take Brent down to a local leisure centre to give his talk, along with three other proven speakers. Beforehand, Brent fails completely to give a normal pose for a photo for the Cooper and Webb website, and fails to play it cool when offered a joint by one of the other speakers.
Brent gives his motivational presentation which is so excruciating that I can’t bring myself to think about it further by writing up the specifics. And then Gervais had to have Brent changing on camera. Oh god. It doesn’t look as though he’ll be working for them again.

Best moment: Any bit of Simon, he should get his own series.

Episode 5 [Tx 28/10/2002]

It’s Red Nose Day! Brent is really into the spirit of the thing, wearing a red nose with pride. Keith is dressed as Ali G, Gareth is being sponsored to hop everywhere, and the Slough Gazzette is coming down especially to cover the story. Dawn is selling kisses for a pound, though not on Finchy’s knob, no matter how many times he says “piggy”. Ben gets cruelly debagged by the staff, and it’s not clear if this raises any extra money. Gareth gives us a quick opinion on how disabled people should be tested to see if they’re falsely claiming benefits.
Tim is also apparently doing kisses for a pound, to annoy and kiss Gareth anyway. Neil and Rachel have prepared a little dance for the staff, which Brent get’s a bit envious of, and you really don’t need the rest of this sentence to know what happens next!
Gareth’s crew, Jimmy the Perv and the Oggmonster come round collecting money, but Brent insults Nathan (the Oggmonster)who leaves. Tim gets people to sponsor him for hiding as many items of Gareth’s as possible. Keith and Dawn have a chat over a scotch egg where we find out Dawn is thinking of going to America, and that she should be careful out there when asking for clothes accessories.
Neil and Jennifer call Brent in, and give him a warning for not doing his work and spending his time coming up with ideas for gameshows. Tim hides all of Gareth’s stuff, and thanks to a pound finally gets to kiss Dawn, which seems to put him off Rachel a bit. Neil and Jennifer have another meeting with Brent, and they sack him. When Brent tells the staff this, he is met with a deafening wall of silence. Bit light on laughs that bit.
Outside, Tim and Dawn hold up a giant cheque while Brent poses for the camera in his Bernie Clifton style outfit.

Best moment: Too many to choose. But I’ve stuck up a pic of the dance anyway.

Episode 6 [Tx 04/11/2002]

Brent is handing out business cards for something or other, and compares himself to Jesus. He completely fails to grasp that no-one in the office cares much that he’s been sacked. Rachel invites Tim up to her parent’s cottage, but he “can’t make it”. Oggy phones Gareth, telling him that the crew’s down Chasers that evening. Helena from Inside Paper comes round to interview Brent. Gareth unfortunately puts a call from Ann on speakerphone. Dirty Bertie, a crappy little toy Gareth has got Gobbler for his birthday, comes out of it’s box and is very annoying for the rest of the show.
Dawn hands in her notice to Brent, who is still being interviewed by Helena. Neil offers Tim the chance to be caretaker manager until they appoint an outside replacement, but Tim declines and suggests Gareth instead. At lunch, Tim is reading a magazine listing what women look most for in a man, and gets the impression that Dawn would like someone quite like him. He goes and splits up with Rachel.
Ray and Jude from Cooper and Webb come along, while Helena is still about, and tell Brent that they won’t be using him again. Neil tells Gareth that he’s Brent’s replacement. Tim talks to Dawn about her leaving, and we find out she’s going to live in America with Lee at his sister’s house, which is massive.
During a little talking head, Tim walks out the room and goes and talks to Dawn, but his mic is off so we can’t hear what is said. Dawn says no though.
Brent is shown the generous redundancy contract, but doesn’t sign it and asks to be given a second chance, breaking down in the process.

Best moment: Tim acting on impulse.
